Cycling

From the door-step of the cottage, the two-mile lane along the water’s edge gives a taste that this is an area for those who love to cycle! The quiet country roads along the North Solway coast will give you stunning views of the sea and the distant mountains of the Lake District across the Solway Firth. You will pass castles and imposing country houses with gardens open to the public – and you may stop to rest at the small villages and towns along the way with their colourful harbours and fishing boats.

Quiet lanes away from the coast are ideal in order to explore the landscape, lochs and forests of the region whilst if you enjoy off-road cycling the cottage is centrally located for 5 of the 7Stanes off-road trails. 7Stanes ‘Scotland’s Biking Heaven’ is a network of purpose built forest and hill trails offering graded rides through scenery of outstanding beauty. The National Cycle Route built by Sustrans offers well-signposted and safe routes through some of the most beautiful areas of the region and maps and information can be found on the following website:

Long Cottage is an ideal base for bicycle holidays and in order to welcome cyclists there is an award-winning metal Asgard bike shed, providing secure storage for up to 4 adult 29er (extra large) mountain bikes.
